What is a Safety Learning Center & Museum?
The Safety Learning Center & Fire Museum combines the history and heritage of the fire service in Portland with a true learning environment. Considered the "ultimate safety education destination," it has no rival as a unique event destination, perspective on Portland history, and safety education classroom. It has proven a valuable asset in providing for the safety education needs of Portland Metro community.
Why?
The Safety Learning Center is an educational lynchpin for Portland Fire & Rescue as its members strive to create a safer community for the most At-Risk groups, children and senior citizens. The Safety Learning Center is a full-sensory experience, effectively matching the attraction of other education and entertainment venues. This unique education destination also provides efficiencies in time management for Fire Bureau staff and programming, thus stretching tax dollars at the same time it improves outreach and enhances services to the citizens of Portland.
Visitation Programs
Visitation programs include "Safety Saturday" as well as scheduled tours. Safety Saturday is held the second Saturday of each month (except July & August) and brings a variety of safety education programs and injury prevention offerings to the community. Fire Safety, car seat clinic locations, child identification programs, and poisoning prevention education are but a few of the many offerings that may be presented each month. Along with Safety Saturday, the high risk citizens of Portland (children and seniors) will also be offered special visitation programs to help meet their safety needs. These will be hosted by educators who will strive to create a greater foundation for safety within these vulnerable populations. Tours and facility usege is available for these types of use:

Public/Private Cooperative Project
This project is a cooperative effort between the city fire department, Portland Fire & Rescue and the non-profit organization, the Jeff Morris Fire and Life Safety Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to promoting fire and life safety education and preserving the history of the fire service. This facility accomplishes both. Portland Fire & Rescue provides professional staff support for the Foundation to assist the volunteer board members accomplish the Foundations mission. The result is a non-profit organization with virtually no overhead costs and a government agency utilizing non-traditional funding to meet the needs of the citizens of Portland. In todays era of limited dollars and resources, there cannot be a better opportunity to serve the Portland community
The Historic Belmont Firehouse
The Safety Learning Center & Fire Museum, at the Historic Belmont Firehouse is a unique facility that offers the rich history and heritage of Portland Fire & Rescue's 150 years of service to the community. This building and its historic contents tell the story of the fire service evolution in Portland. It is a literal timeline for the many stories of camaraderie and heroism. Every visitor will be asked to consider the important questions related to their personal safety and that of their loved ones. The hope is that every visitor leaves with greater safety skills than when they arrived. This will help the entire community become a safer place for all.
